| Historical Abstract: |
During the 1970's, Northeastern University worked to make the University
more a part of the international community. Many students held co-op
jobs in foreign countries and Northeastern University staff went abroad
to recruit, teach or conduct research. In addition, Northeastern experienced
an increase in international student enrollment. Because of the increasing
number of international students, the Office of Student Affairs employed
a Foreign Student Advisor and expanded services, the goal of which
was to ensure a positive experience. In 1975, the International Students
Office separated from the Student Center to become a distinct unit.
The newly separated International Students Office provided services,
educational programs, and social events; helped the university understand
their needs; and served as a liaison to international student sponsors,
such as the Latin American Scholarship Program for American Universities,
and to American agencies, international agencies, and foreign and
domestic governments. The International Student Office provided seminars
on topics such as taxes, employment, and immigration and worked to
ensure students had the appropriate papers to study or work in this
country. The International Student Office also hosted activities for
international students and others students on campus, such as International
Week, which began in 1978. In 2002, the International Student Office
and its duties were subsumed by International Student & Scholar
Institute. |
