| Scope and Content Abstract: | This collection is made up of the course notes created by Northeastern faculty for students in the Western Civilization course (numbers 23.101 and 23.102). Each packet provides materials on a particular theme such as Child-rearing in the Middle Ages: Ninth through Twelfth Centuries and Henry II of England and Philip II of France: A Comparison. This collection is incomplete, but provides course notes for a range of units from Unit II-2 to X-5. Some unit notes are revised versions. There is also a guide to study authored by Donald R. Allen and Gerald Herman that provides suggestions for studying and includes sample quizzes. The course notes in this collection are edited by R. Wayne Anderson, David Bridger, Martha Ellis Francois, Ruth-Ann Harris, Gerald Herman, and Barbara Millner. |
| Historical Abstract: | Beginning in the 1972-1973 academic year, Northeastern's history department offered a two-semester course in Western Civilization that surveyed the major ideas and institutions of Western Civilization from ancient times to the present. Faculty-prepared course note packets were compiled for each unit and included selections from primary and secondary sources, study questions, and summaries of major themes covered. These course packets were published by Northeastern beginning in 1972 and in use, sometimes in revised form, into the early 1980s. The Western Civilization course, as it was described in the 1972-73 course catalog, continued to be offered through the 1988-1989 academic year. |
