| Historical Abstract: | Northeastern University's (NU) College of Education (CE) was formed in 1953 as a result of the growing need for elementary and secondary school educators in the United States. CE offered both undergraduate and graduate degree programs. By 1967, it employed 22 faculty members and included five departments, each with its own specialty. During the 1960s, mandatory student teaching was implemented and the College by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education accredited the program. Enrollment in the CE peaked in 1970 with the College instructing over 1,300 undergraduate and 1,001 graduate students and employing 55 full-time faculty members. In 1980, responding to a decline in enrollment and a decreased need for teachers, NU merged the CE with the Boston-Bouve College, forming the Boston-Bouve College of Human Development Professions. In 1992, the education department was again moved to the College of Arts and Sciences where it remained a department of the college until July 1999 when it was renamed the School of Education. |
