Title:Lower Roxbury Community Corporation records
Call Number:M106
Volume:.18 cubic ft. (1 box)
Scope and Content Abstract:The Lower Roxbury Community Corporation records reflect the LRCC's involvement in city government and planning and its activities to rouse support for affordable housing and provide input into urban renewal in Lower Roxbury. The collection comprises board meeting minutes, correspondence, informational brochures about the LRCC, the LRCC Voice (a newsletter), the Washington Park Urban Renewal Area Bulletin, and the Project Area Committee meeting minutes. The Project Area Committee was an affiliated committee dealing with residence life at LRCC housing projects, namely Smith and Haynes houses.
Historical Abstract: The Lower Roxbury Community Corporation (LRCC) was formed in May 1966 by four small neighborhood groups that met at four neighborhood centers in Lower Roxbury in May 1966. The neighborhood meetings were in response to the Boston Redevelopment Authority's (BRA) proposal to build a high school in Lower Roxbury, potentially displacing local residents and businesses. LRCC's purpose was to give residents a say in urban renewal projects, including the expansion of Interstate 95, that affected Lower Roxbury in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The LRCC tried to gain support to house all Lower Roxbury residents who wanted to remain in the area, serving as a housing developer, sponsor, and owner of nonprofit, cooperative housing. The organization's mission also included fostering social services, improving local schooling and education, encouraging local business development, offering relocation assistance, participating in landscaping projects, and hosting community social events. The LRCC later formed Madison Park Development Corporation, which supports community development and promotes affordable housing in Lower Roxbury.
