Scope and Content Abstract:The collection documents F. Andre Favat's (FAF) teaching career at Northeastern University (NU). It includes reports and committee records from NU's Department of Instruction, records regarding student teaching, FAF's lecture notes and published writings, and newspaper clippings about his murder.
Historical Abstract:Born in Ilion, New York, F. Andre Favat (FAF) earned his A.B. from the State University of New York at Albany in 1959 and received his master's and doctoral degrees in education from Harvard University. In 1969 he joined Northeastern University as assistant professor of English education in the Department of Instruction. He became an associate professor in 1972. As a member of Northeastern University's faculty, FAF was the chair of the Undergraduate and Curriculum Committee and the coordinator of faculty development. He was also actively involved with the Massachusetts, New England and National Councils of Teachers of English. FAF was murdered in 1976, at the age of 38.

Scope and Content Note

The F. Andre Favat collection spans the years 1960-1982, with the bulk of the material detailing FAF's career at Northeastern University, 1969-1976.  It is arranged alphabetically and organized at the folder level.

The collection comprises FAF's files and published works.  It consists of reports and committee records from the Department of Instruction, student teaching records, and FAF's lecture notes and published writings.  The student teaching files include student placement records and student evaluations of cooperating teachers, the course, and the student teaching experience.

In addition, the collection contains newspaper clippings regarding FAF's murder and the allegations of homosexuality that arose during the investigation and trial.

Historical Note

Born in Ilion, New York, in 1938, F. Andre Favat (FAF) earned his A.B. from the State University of New York at Albany in 1959 and received his master's and doctoral degrees in Education from Harvard University.  In 1969 he joined Northeastern as assistant professor of English education in the Department of instruction. He became an associate professor in 1972.  As a member of Northeastern University's faculty, FAF was the chair of the Undergraduate and Curriculum Committee and the coordinator of faculty development.

FAF belonged to the American Association of University Professors Modern Language Association, the International Reading Association, Phi Delta Kappa, and the Alumni Association of the Harvard Graduate School of Education.  He was also actively involved with the Massachusetts, New England and National Councils of Teachers of English.  He chaired the Committee on Research and served on the Executive Committee of the Massachusetts Council of Teachers of English.  As a member of the New England Council of Teachers of English, FAF chaired the Curriculum committee and served on both the School and College Committee, and the Advisory Committee.  In addition, FAF held the positions of director of the National Council of Teachers of English and president of the Massachusetts Council of Teachers of English at the time of his death.

F. Andre Favat was murdered in 1976 at the age of 38. In 1979 the F. Andre Favat Learning Resources Center and Library of Children's Literature was established in his memory at Northeastern University.
