Scope and Content Note:The collection documents the educational programs and structure of the Women's Institute for Leadership Development (WILD). Series 1. Administration documents WILD's organizational structure, with a strong focus on fundraising efforts, including grant proposals and fundraising events. Also documented are WILD's internal structures, including its Board of Directors and committees, strategic planning process, and WILD's connections with other organizations, including labor unions, educational institutions, and community–based groups. Series 2. Programs, Events, and Curricula documents WILD's educational offerings on topics of interest to working women through its major annual events, Summer Institute and WILD in the Winter, as well as other programs offered independently or in conjunction with other organizations. Materials relating to the Summer Institute and WILD in the Winter include committee meeting minutes, logistical information, teacher outreach and training, workshop agendas and outlines, materials for participants' use, and evaluations. Records of other educational programming consist mainly of curricula, grouped by topic. Also included are files relating to caucus groups and regional events. Series 3. Photographs documents WILD through images. The photographic prints and negatives in this series are largely unidentified, but topics documented include the Summer Institute and WILD in the Winter, the board of directors, rallies, the Women of African Heritage Leadership Project, and WomenLead.
Historical Note:The Women's Institute for Leadership Development (WILD) was founded in 1986 to increase the number and diversity of women in the Massachusetts labor movement and increase women's effectiveness as organizers in their unions and community organizations. Through a variety of educational programs, WILD sought to prepare women leaders on all fronts. In addition to leadership development workshops, WILD also offered workshops addressing barriers their participants might face, particularly racism and sexism. WILD's flagship event was the annual Summer Institute, a weekend–long leadership and skills development program. WILD also offered one–day events called “WILD in the Winter”. WILD also developed curricula to bring educational opportunities to community–based organizations and to sustain its educational mission by training new workshop facilitators. WILD remains an active organization and continues to offer Summer Institute and WILD in the Winter programs.
