| Historical Note: | Daniel Webster (1782-1852) was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1812 and served three terms. In 1827 he was elected senator from Massachusetts. Webster made a failed run for the presidency in 1836. In 1841 President William Henry Harrison named Webster secretary of state. He resigned in 1843, but President Millard Fillmore re-appointed him in 1850 and Webster served until his death in 1852. |
