Series:

1. Administrative Files, 1913-1972 (bulk 1930-1970)
Volume:2.00 cubic ft.
Arrangement:

Alphabetical
Summary:

This series traces the school's philosophy and purpose through the records of Boston-Bouvé College's administrative departments and governing bodies. Of note are founding documents, including the first constitution, and legal papers that record many of the school's developments. Annual and other reports provide an overview of the school's administration and teaching. The minutes of the school's corporation, correspondence, and committee records document the Bouvé's resignation from Boston School of Physical Education, the merger of the Bouvé School, Inc. and Boston School of Physical Education, and the decision to disaffiliate from Tufts and merge with Northeastern University.

Much of the series includes financial correspondence about fund-raising efforts and the school's periodic financial struggles. Other financial records are account ledgers and audit reports. This series also includes the correspondence, account statements, and legal documents detail the agreement between Posse and Bouvé-Boston School of Physical Education in 1942.

Series:

2. Office of the Director/Dean, 1917-1978 (bulk 1960-1977)
Volume:3.50 cubic ft.
Arrangement:

Organized into 5 subseries: A. Bouvé, Marjorie; B. Sweet, Ruth Page; C. Dissell, Dorothy; D. Lynn, Minnie; E. Allen, Catherine.
Summary:

Important records in this series detail mergers between the school and other educational institutions. Marjorie Bouvé and Dean Lynn both corresponded with corporation members and peers about mergers that occurred during their administrations. Bouvé's records include documents about her resignation from the Boston School of Physical Education, the founding of the Bouvé School, and merger between the Boston School of Physical Education and the Bouvé School. Dean Lynn's records contain correspondence and notes about the merger and forms documenting the transfer of the school's equipment to Northeastern University. Reports generated during Lynn's tenure include the Melby Report, an independent assessment of Bouvé-Boston School of Physical Education in 1962, and a report on physical education at Wheaton College co-authored by Lynn. Much of Dean Allen's records consist of speeches and articles she wrote about physical and recreation education and the reference material she drew upon for these pieces. Some of these writings and reference materials have been microfilmed and also can be found in Series 8 (boxes 94, 95). Allen's records also include memorandum and minutes about merging the men's and women's physical education departments and creating a recreation education major in 1968. The deans and directors of the Boston-Bouvé College were involved in their profession beyond the school itself and this series contains conference proceedings and correspondence to and from professional organizations that provide information about the physical education field.

Volume:2.50 cubic ft.
Arrangement:

Alphabetical
Summary:

This series contains correspondence to and from and publications of professional organizations and letters to and from members of the medical professions accumulated during the tenures of department chairs Constance Green and Katherine Carlisle. 4. Student Organizations and Activities, 1915-1977 (bulk 1950-1970)
Volume:5.55 cubic ft.
Arrangement:

Alphabetical
Summary:

This series documents the extracurricular activities of alumnae and students. Boston-Bouvé College's Alumnae Association raised funds for the school, kept track of alumnae, and organized reunions and other events. The Alumnae Association files are mostly comprised of newsletter and newspaper clippings on each graduated class. Also included are account ledgers and notebooks detailing expenses and fund- raising efforts. Minutes and notebooks provide information about the Alumnae Association's plans for reunions.

Notebooks, minutes, and programs created by the Athletic Association document the different sports in which Boston-Bouvé College students participated. Reports document competitions between Boston-Bouvé College's Blue and White teams and matches between other intramural teams. Programs from student events such as demonstrations, school dances, and commencement activities are also in this series. Minutes from student government meetings record officers' planning of social events and representing their school's interests in Tuft's student government body. Notebooks of advice written over many years and passed down to incoming student government officers detail much about student life and long-held traditions. This series also contains records from several smaller organizations such as Student Fellowship which raised funds for projects in other countries.

Series:

6. Publications, 1913-1997 (bulk 1922-1981)
Volume:6.00 cubic ft.
Arrangement:

Organized into 2 subseries: A. Boston-Bouvé College; B. Non- Boston-Bouvé College.
Summary:

Subseries A contains brochures, catalogs, reports, and newsletters published by the Boston-Bouvé College to inform its students, alumnae and the general public about the school's courses, events, and students. A near-complete series of yearbooks provide insight into Boston-Bouvé College student life. Newspaper and magazine clippings also document student activities and provide information about the activities of its faculty and administration and significant changes for the school.

An important part of this subseries is the historical information compiled by Boston-Bouvé College staff, alumnae, and other writers. Several of the historical compilations include chronologies and interpretations of the school's history. This subseries contains a masters thesis on Boston-Bouvé College as well as records from a history project spearheaded by Dean Allen in 1977. She and other volunteers collected information from alumnae and faculty which Allen used to begin writing a book. The subseries contains the research and completed chapters.

Subseries B contains material published by institutions other than Boston-Bouvé College, including catalogs from other early Boston-area physical education schools, and journals, reports, reprints, and pamphlets that document the physical education and physical therapy fields.

Series:

7. Personal Material: Faculty, Alumnae, and Corporation, 1892-2000 (bulk 1892-1970)
Volume:4.00 cubic ft.
Arrangement:

Alphabetical
Summary:

This series consists of personal material from the alumnae, faculty, and administration of the Boston-Bouvé College. There are also materials from corporation member Ethel Perrin. Scrapbooks, notebooks, correspondence, notes from classes, photographs and clippings document these women's lives before, during, and after they were a part of Boston-Bouvé College.

Evlyth Walen was one of several women from the Boston-Bouvé College who traveled to Japan in the 1930s to help open a school of physical education modeled after the Boston-Bouvé College. Her photo albums show students at the school and camp. Series 2 (Box 8) contains more information about this school and other photographs are in Series 8 (Box 91). Correspondence received by Dr. Katherine Andrews regarding her long-time partner Ruth Sweet is primarily about Sweet's illness and eventual death in 1958. A two-volume scrapbook assembled by alumnae pays tribute to alumna, faculty member, and professional dancer Pauline Chellis.

Series:

8. Audio-Visual Material, 1895-1999 (bulk 1919-1969)
Volume:6.00 cubic ft.
Arrangement:

Organized into 4 subseries: A. Photographs, Slides, and Negatives; B. Audio Recordings; C. Film; D. Microfilm.
Summary:

This series contains non-print material that documents the Boston-Bouvé College. An important part of this series are the photographs taken by students, faculty, and professional photographers of official and unofficial life at Boston-Bouvé College. Photographs from the first decades of the school show students in the 1920s and 30s at summer camp, a required part of the Boston School of Physical Education 's program. Many photographs document students participating in the same sporting events over several decades. Other photographs record important events like class days and school dances. The photographs also include formal portraits of classes and sports teams. Negatives that could be matched with prints have been kept with the prints, while the rest are located with other unmatched negatives. Photographs that were collected by one person or accompany the personal material of faculty and alumnae are in Series 7.

Audio material consists of cassette recordings of speeches given by Dean Allen, Dean Lynn, and others at professional conferences. The series also contains oral histories with graduates from 1938-39 as well as interviews with faculty. A recording of Chancellor Asa Knowles provides information about the merger between the Bouvé-Boston School of Physical Education and Northeastern University in 1964.

Microfilm in this series contains speeches about physical and recreation education by Catherine Allen and reference materials she used for these speeches.

The films in this series are of events and summer camp during the 1960s.
