National Lawyers Guild Massachusetts Chapter Records
Northeastern University Libraries, Archives and Special Collections Department is pleased to announce the acquisition of the historical records of the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, 1970 to 2006.
The National Lawyers Guild (NLG) was founded in 1937 to advance human and civil rights and has played a critical role in providing legal support to labor, civil rights, economic rights, international human rights, anti-war, and other movements. The Massachusetts Chapter of the NLG, an association of progressive lawyers, law students, paralegals, judges, legal secretaries, and community activists, seeks justice by working for immigrant and human rights, building community resources through the Street Law Clinics and the Lawyer Referral Service, acting as legal observers at demonstrations, educating the public about judicial nominees, and promoting workers’ rights.
The collection documents the governance, program, and fundraising activities of the organization and includes committee minutes, Massachusetts Chapter publications including the organization’s newsletter Mass Dissent, correspondence, budgets and more.
This material contributes to the University Archives and Special Collection Department’s collecting focus on records of private, non-profit, community-based organizations that are concerned with social justice issues. See a list of the Department’s special collections.
