Women’s Organizations Collections Available for Research

The NU Libraries announce that the historical records of four Boston area women’s organizations are now open for research.

The The Women’s Center in Cambridge, MA recently donated the collections to the NU Archives and Special Collections Department.

These collections contribute to the University Archives and Special Collection Department’s focus on collecting the records of private, non-profit, community-based organizations that are concerned with social justice issues.

Overview

The Women's Coffeehouse collection documents the organization and activities of the Women's Coffeehouse in Cambridge, MA. The collection contains meeting minutes, photos, fliers, press releases, and audiotapes of weekly performances, which were intended to spark discourse among women about shared issues and concerns.

The Boston Area Feminist Coalition collection documents the effort to organize women and feminist groups during the period 1981-1983, and especially to organize against the New Right, to build effective communication networks, and to create a political discourse that acknowledged the differences among women. The collection contains meeting minutes and agendas, press releases, correspondence, proposals, member lists, fliers, and a scrapbook documenting the Coalition’s activities.

The Female Liberation (1968-1974) collection documents a radical feminist organization that confronted issues such as self-defense, equal wages, birth control, consumerism, and the media's portrayal of women. This collection contains newsletters, position papers, statements, correspondence, legal documents, fliers, press releases, and all six issues of Female Liberation’s journal No More Fun and Games: A Journal of Female Liberation.

The Sister Courage collection documents a non-profit feminist collective founded in 1974 to publish Sister Courage, a newspaper addressing issues such as health, day care, housing, union organization, and employment. This collection includes legal documents, correspondence, newsletters, meeting minutes, and copies of the newspaper Sister Courage from 1975-1978.
