Background

The Vice Provost for Research, Srinivas Sridhar, Faculty and Colleges are engaging, with the Library, in a rigorous examination of the journals collection, with the goal of optimizing the use of available resources. The aim is to identify less-heavily used titles for cancellation, and to re-invest the savings in subscriptions to new titles more closely oriented to the current needs of NU's faculty and students.

We are grateful for the very significant amount of effort and time that colleagues have been willing to commit to this complex process.

New Titles

The NU community has already in 2005 been invited to submit requests for new journal subscriptions, using the Request Form below. The list of requests so far received has been reviewed by the Library and the Provost's Office, and the following titles approved for purchase:

Note:This list includes some titles where the request involved a conversion from an existing print subscription to electronic. All subscriptions have been made available in electronic format wherever available, subject to the negotiation of licensing acceptable to the University.

Further Requests for New Journal or Database Subscriptions

A key continuing objective of this review is to free up money for the purchase of new journal subscriptions. Please use the form below to submit your requests for new titles. Please do this whether or not you have asked in previous years for the titles concerned. The Library and the Provost's Office will review the requests on an ongoing basis, and journals selected for purchase will be announced on this page as funds allow. The Library will provide feedback on other requests as appropriate.

Cancellations

In the latter part of 2005, nine Departments/Colleges (Business, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer and Info Science, Economics, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Nursing, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Psychology), undertook a comprehensive review of the Library's journal subscriptions in their areas of interest. This process followed the path completed in the previous year by five other departments (Biology, Bouvé College of Health Sciences, Chemistry, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Physics).

The list of proposed cancellations agreed by the nine departments are now presented here, and the campus community is invited to present reasoned requests for reprieves, using the form below. The deadline for the submission of reprieve requests is Wednesday December 13, 2006. Requests will be reviewed by the Library and the Provost's Office, and a finalized list of cancellations will be posted here. Finalized cancellations will take effect from January 2007.

Other sources for ejournals

Some of the titles proposed for cancellation may be available, at least for now, within one of our subscription databases of general collected journal literature such as Lexis-Nexis or Ebsco. To find out if alternative electronic versions are currently available, check the Library's Ejournal Finder.
