Snell Library Improves Media Access

Here's what the Library is doing to improve your access to video, music, and sound recordings!

  • Moving 25,000 media materials to the open stacks and, in some cases, to the Library reserve collection, to offer users greater access to the collection. For example, someone browsing the Snell Library collection for materials on civil rights will now be able to discover both books and media materials in the same place.
  • Relocating fragile or high-demand materials to the Circulation desk and other secure locations so they are available for class assignments and protected from damage.
  • Making sure video, music, and sound recordings are searchable and listed accurately in Nucat, our online catalog!
  • Transforming the former 2nd floor Media Center into an advanced Digital Media Design Studio, to meet increasing demand for a space where Northeastern students and faculty can create media content for class and research. The University will be refurbishing some space formerly occupied by the Media Center to create a new home for the Center for Innovation and Excellence in Teaching and Learning.
Recommendations for the purchase of media materials can be made online or by contacting the pertinent Library Subject Specialist. For assistance in finding particular media materials owned by the Library, please inquire at the Circulation, Information, or Reference Desks. Faculty can request media materials be placed on course reserve by filling out the Reserve form on myNeu (select the "Library" tab), and can also reserve media materials for classroom showings.

The Library's website shall keep you up to-date with the most recent information on these improvements. Thank you for your patience! As you may very well guess, the behind-the-scenes work on this major project takes time and careful attention to detail, so that we continue to maintain high quality information and services for our users. We are happy to report that all DVDs have already been relocated, and work on the other formats is progressing as a matter of urgency.
