Accessible Technology

Access to computer software and hardware, located in 118-119 SL and elsewhere in Snell Library, is available to anyone with a disability, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Priority will be accorded to members of the NU community during periods of heavy use.

Jaws (version 5.0) and Magic (version 8.0)

Jaws reads text on the computer screen aloud, allowing users who are blind or visually impaired to operate the computer. Works with Internet Explorer, word processing programs, e-mail programs, etc.

Magic magnifies images and text on the computer screen for users who are visually impaired. The entire screen can be magnified or users can use a magnification lens, which can be moved by a mouse. Color and contrast adjustments are also available.

Kurzweil 1000 Version 7.0

Converts text and scanned documents into speech for users who are blind or visually impaired. Scanner attached.

Kurzweil 3000 Version 8.0

Converts text and scanned documents into speech for users who have learning disabilities. It also reads back what you compose and provides reference and correction tools for reading, writing, studying, and testing. Scanner attached.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 6 Preferred

Creates text from speech with Windows-based applications, for users who have physical disabilities, repetitive injuries, learning disabilities or for anyone who prefers not to type.

Braille Printer

Allows printing of text in Braille on special paper. Text can be typed on the computer or imported from Word or ASCII files. Access restricted to Northeastern University students, faculty, and staff only.

Talking Books

Three four-track tape players with headphones are available for people with disabilities.
Location: Two tape players in the Media Center, and one is in the Assistive Technology area on the main floor. This equipment is borrowed from the Perkins School for the Blind.
